Eminem opened a pop-up in Detroit called Mom’s Spaghetti.
The oft-quoted lyric from Eminem’s (AKA Marshall Mathers/Slim Shady) “Lose Yourself” goes, “His palms are sweaty / knees weak, arms are heavy / There’s vomit on his sweater already, Mom’s spaghetti.” Because it has spawned a thousand memes, Eminem decided to have a little fun with the idea and opened Mom’s Spaghetti as a pop-up serving spaghetti dishes. It was only open for three days, December 15-17, at The Shelter, the real-life venue where B Rabbit battled Papa Doc in the movie 8 Mile. It is under St. Andrew’s Hall.
Of course, the lyric in question refers to vomit, but apparently, the dishes served were not vomit-worthy. Union Joints catered the event. They served Spaghetti with meatballs ($8) or without ($5) and even had a special “S’ghetti Sandwich” ($5). Unfortunately, neither Union Joints nor Eminem plans on repeating this momentous event, but here’s hoping!
This was largely a promotional venture, as it coincided with the release of his new album Revival, which has seen both critical acclaim and scorn. (You can buy it here). It’s also seen commercial success. According to Billboard, “Eminem is the first act to achieve eight consecutive chart entries that debuted at No. 1.” What a feat for this Detroit native.
Marshall Mathers himself even stopped into Mom’s Spaghetti to promote his merchandise and sign autographs over that weekend.
Here is the music video featuring the lyrics that launched a thousand memes. Hold out for the “Mom’s Spaghetti” line. It’s “Lose Yourself” off of the 8 Mile soundtrack by Eminem.
